Overview and History of the Electric Bass

"The double bass, also called the string bass, upright bass, or contrabass, is the largest and lowest-pitched bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra. The name, ""double bass,"" derives from the early use of the instrument to double—an octave lower where possible—the bass part written for the cello. It is a standard member of the string section of the symphony orchestra[1] and smaller string ensembles[2] in Western classical music. In addition, it is used in other genres such as jazz, 1950s-style blues and rock and roll, rockabilly/psychobilly, traditional country music, bluegrass, and tango. Double basses are constructed from several types of wood, including maple for the back, spruce for the top, and ebony for the fingerboard. It is uncertain whether the instrument is a descendant of the viola da gamba or from the violin, but it is traditionally aligned with the violin family. While the double bass is nearly identical in construction to violin family instruments, it also has features that derive from the viols. Like many other string instruments, the double bass is played either with a bow (arco) or by plucking the strings (pizzicato). In orchestral repertoire and tango music, both bowing and plucking styles are used. In jazz, the bass is mostly plucked, except for some solos (and also occasional written parts in modern jazz) that call for the bow. In most other genres, such as blues and rockabilly, the bass is plucked." Click Here to Learn Even More About The Electric Bass

When to Begin Electric Bass Lessons

Bass lessons can begin at a very early and are an excellent foundation for the study of other instruments in future. Some students have begun their studies as early as the age of 10. Whether or not this is possible is dependant on the child’s capacity to pay attention at this very early age and all children are different (ages 12-14 are more typical). No matter the age, whether young or old, the bass is a great instrument to begin or continue one’s music education. Procuring an Instrument for Your Electric Bass Lessons

Most people begin by renting an instrument. This is really practical because as children grow they move through different sizes of the bass from 1/4 size to full size. Because children grow so rapidly purchasing an instrument that is other than full size can be less of a good investment unless you have multiple children and another child will use the various sizes as time moves on. If you are ready to begin on a full size instrument then you might wish to consider purchasing a cello. A good student instrument starts out in the range of $1200.00-3000.00. The most famous bassses hundreds of years old by makers like Stradivarius can fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction.
