Teaching Philosophy

Music is a powerful tool that focuses the mind, nurtures imagination, and unites seemingly unrelated ideas. As a teacher, I wholeheartedly believe in fostering a learning environment where students can explore the essence of sound and the cultural significance of music in ways that personally resonate with them. I am dedicated to bridging the gap between the physical act of playing music and its deeper meaning for each student. By encouraging exploration and self-discovery, I empower students to connect with music on a profound level that is uniquely their own. In my teaching approach, ear training and listening practice hold significant importance. By developing a strong sense of ear and deep listening skills, students can genuinely connect with the music they play. This not only enhances their technical abilities but also instills a genuine emotional connection to the pieces they perform. Furthermore, I firmly believe that enjoying and having a personal connection to the music being played is crucial for effective learning. By incorporating pieces that resonate with each student, we ensure that the learning process is enjoyable and meaningful. This connection to the music becomes a driving force, inspiring students to stay committed to their musical journey.

I have a Bachelor in applied music from Vancouver Community College (VCC) where I studied jazz guitar and classical composition. I have played in venues around Vancouver in bands with styles ranging from rock and metal to free jazz and noise.

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
