My name is Randy Waugh and I've been a professional musician for 50 years, a music teacher for about 40 years (Bagpipe tutor for 12 years), and regardless of the instrument I'm playing or teaching, I focus on achieving the best sound possible and becoming musically well rounded using a holistic approach in mastering an instrument. I am classically trained on trumpet and played with an array of concert, jazz and stage bands when I was a child, young teen and young adult. In my mid-teens, I discovered and learned electric bass which I played professionally on many gigs and tours with several bands during the 1970's--this was my primary source of income. I have studied the Great Highland Bagpipe and Scottish Smallpipes for about 20 years. Despite being a musician and tutor for many years, my learning journey continues to this day and I regularly take lessons with masters to continue to hone my skills and improve my overall sound and playing. All instruments are a lifelong pursuit and when you achieve that beautiful locked-in sound. I always strive and teach my students to strive for the richest, highest-quality sound they can produce in any given circumstance. In other words, I teach students to stay true to the style of music they are playing and to deliver the best performance of any song wherever they are playing. I will also continue to encourage my students to become the best musicians they can in whatever style they hope to play in, and to help them to perpetually strive to become better musicians.

Name: Randy (Full name will be provided upon registration)

Age: 60's

Gender: male

I was classically trained on Trumpet in the early 1970s using the Royal Conservatory of Music method. In 1980 I auditioned for and was accepted into the Berklee College of Music Bass Guitar Performance program--regrettably, I never attended. I have been an accredited bagpipe tutor with The Scottish Pipe & Drum Qualifications Board (PDQB) since 2015. I have studied privately with some of the world's greatest bagpipers including: PM Bruce Campbell, PM Andrew Douglas, Craig Munro, PM Robert Mathieson, Calum Beaumont, Bruce Gandy and others. I am currently studying with the world renowned jazz trumpeter Bobby Shew (since Jan 2023) I have played on many stages, playing many styles of music in several countries spanning over decades and have a wealth of real world experience that I bring to students.

As a recording artist, I have composed, arranged, recorded and performed on 7 CDs. 4 of these CDs are still available commercially. In 2020, my Celtic Rock band Fiùran won an IMA (Indie Music Award) in New York City - this led to working with industry heavyweight Scott Hull, who has mastered most A-list artists active in the music industry.

I grew up with a father who was a working musician playing on radio and television. The work ethic and thirst for life-long learning as a musician that he instilled in me was most certainly the blueprint for the musician I have become. I am a multi-instrumentalist who has played many different venues with groups and as a solo artist over the last 50 years. I have played from hard rock to jazz to classical and many things in between. This has enriched my works as a composer, recording artist and performer. There is a consistent theme -- music is for life, music will be there for you when you are happy or sad, no matter what style, producing quality sounds is satisfying to our souls and helps enrich us far beyond words. One of my greatest joys in life is guiding people along their music learning journeys and sharing in their frustrations and achievements. In 2009 I formed a Scottish Gaelic choir (Ar n-Òran). We won competitions in Canada in the United States and in 2011 we won two placings at the Royal National Mòd in Stornoway, Scotland. We also performed a few songs that I'd composed for a sold out audience at An Lanntair, to commemorate the Crowning of Lewis MacKinnon, the first Canadian Bard (Poet Laureate) in history. In 2016, I formed a youth bagpipe band (Thuirle Thairle) who won competitions at several locations in Ontario. In 2018, we competed at The World Bagpipe Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. I was educated in Scottish Gaelic at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig (2009 - 2012), Scotland's only all Gaelic university. I have been a P/T professor at University of Ottawa since 2013 and still teach Scottish Gaelic language and culture to full classes in the CLT1100 and CLT1101 courses.

Rates and Studio Policies
Registration Fee: $25.00 (One-time lifetime registration fee may be used by all family members)

Rates for instruction:
30 minute private lesson: $39.00
45 minute private lesson: $49.00
60 minute private lesson: $59.00

Travel charge: additional $15.00 per visit (for lessons in a client's home as opposed to my studio)

1. Cancellation Policy
Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy
A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy
Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy
Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period
There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
