Overview and History of the Clarinet

The clarinet is a musical instrument in the woodwind family. The name derives from adding the suffix -et (meaning little) to the Italian word clarino (meaning a type of trumpet), as the first clarinets had a strident tone similar to that of a trumpet. The instrument has an approximately cylindrical bore, and uses a single reed. Clarinets comprise a family of instruments of differing sizes and pitches. The clarinet family is the largest such woodwind family, with more than a dozen types, ranging from the BB flat contrabass to the E flat soprano. Of these many are rare or obsolete, and music written for them is usually played on one of the more common types. The unmodified word clarinet usually refers to the B? soprano clarinet, by far the most common clarinet. A person who plays the clarinet is called a clarinetist or clarinetist. The clarinet was invented in Germany by Johann Christoph Denner around the turn of the 18th century, by adding a register key to the earlier chalumeau. Over time, additional key work and airtight pads were added to improve tone and playability. Today, the clarinet is used in both jazz and classical ensembles, as well as in chamber groups and as a solo instrument. Click Here to Learn Even More About The Clarinet

When to Begin Clarinet Lessons

Clarinet lessons can begin very early and are an excellent foundation for the study of other instruments in future. Some students have begun their studies as early as the age of 7. Whether or not this is possible is dependant on the child’s capacity to pay attention at this very early age and all children are different (ages 10-12 are more typical). No matter the age, whether young or old, the clarinet is a great instrument to begin or continue one’s music education. Beethoven at Home will help you choose the right personality of clarinet teacher for yourself or your child. Our local consultant will contact you and discuss your child’s personality and try to come up with a match that suits your requirements. Click Here to Get Your Clarinet Lessons Started Right Now

Procuring an Instrument for Your Clarinet Lessons

Typically students rent an instrument at the outset of studies. When the commitment has been made to continue they then make the investment in the purchase of an intermediate or advanced quality instrument. Clarinets also require the regular purchase of reeds. A clarinet will require an annual check up for key and pad maintenance.
