Teaching Philosophy

It is important that my students have a firm understanding of the basic concepts and foundations of music under their belt. What is the importance of Music Theory? What controls the sound on a saxophone, flute, clarinet? My role as an instructor is to provide the basic concepts to my students. I will open the door for my students to seek to a new musical world undiscovered! You can see their eyes light up and their confidence grow as they finally grasp musical concepts and the smile on their face as they finally complete their first recital, composition, or theory exam. Each student has different needs and different learning styles. As a teacher, it is important for me to understand how I can help them best.

Musical Education

I have recently upgraded my certification as a UMTC Elite Educator with Ultimate Music Theory Certification. I have studied with many skilled and talented musicians stemming from jazz and blues music on saxophone with Stan Karp to classical and contemporary music with Dr. Julia Nolan, Dr. Bill Street, and Dr. Charles Stolte. Edmonton: Bachelor of Music Degree 2005 Edmonton: The Kings University College Concert and Chamber Choirs Vancouver: Universal Gospel Choir Vancouver: One Human Family Gospel Choir

Special Skills and Trainings

I started playing the piano at 7 years old and I never stopped! I moved onto the guitar in grade 5, performing by grade 7, saxophone in grade 8, and the rest is history! I composed, performed, and recorded a track in grade 12, and started gigging before I started my degree program in university. In university I performed and toured with the King's University College Concert and Chamber Choirs. After my degree I moved back to Vancouver and started teaching. Having run a daycare with my wife for over 10 years and having taught music for 20 year I feel I have a better understanding of what a child's needs are when it comes to learning!

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
