Teaching Philosophy

Regarding my teaching philosophy, I could say I enjoy teaching music because “Music is the language of the soul” and it powerfully inspires and motivates. I could say that music enriches all people, and that it tells powerful stories, paints beautiful pictures, expresses intimate or strong emotions. I could write how music connects people heart to heart, and it has the power to inspire, motivate, even help change culture, politics, and government, or that it is just plain fun. But I think I prefer to say I love music and people, and I really enjoy when students are successful and enjoy music too. How do students experience success and enjoyment? They are successful when they have a teacher who knows their craft, knows themselves, and knows their student. They are successful when they both do their part to accomplish something difficult but rewarding. We will be working together to develop several of the critical skills and concepts to master and enjoy music.

Musical Education

I earned a Bachelor of Music degree in commercial music from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. It was here that I also formally studied saxophone and flute. While serving as principal clarinet for the university and community orchestra, I continued to perform in classical and jazz ensembles and for many broadways musicals as a "doubler." After graduating, I went on to earn a Master of Music degree from Kent State University in Ohio.

Special Skills and Trainings

- Collaborated with principal musicians of the Cleveland Orchestra at the Blossom Summer Music Festival - Worked with students from renowned universities including Juilliard, Eastman, Peabody Institute, and Curtis Institute - Taught band and orchestra in public and private schools in Phoenix, Arizona - Served as Principal clarinetist for the Phoenix Praise Symphony - Performed as a doubler for various theater productions in Arizona - Continued teaching and seeking performing opportunities in Burlington, Ontario

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
