Teaching Philosophy

Music has been a part of my life since I was a small child and I don't believe that anyone can live without it. Music is all around us if we listen. How we connect with music is as unique as we are as human beings and finding the connection and finding the joy that it brings is a central aspect to music lessons. My teaching is student-focused and follows the routine of warm-ups, technique and creative expression. Within those areas there is almost unlimited ways to connect with the instrument and I look forward to helping you find your unique voice and approach.

Musical Education

I have a Masters Degree in music from McGill University and my main area of study was saxophone and composition in the jazz idiom. During my bachelor studies at UBC I studied and performed classical saxophone. Thus my range of experience is quite broad, but my main area of expertise is in the field of jazz. My saxophone teachers include Dave Branter, Remi Bolduc, Mike Allen, Jane Ira Bloom, and John Handy. As an ensemble musician most of my experience has been in Jazz Orchestras and Big Bands. I have played in ensembles led by Ian MacDougall, Alan Matheson and Rob McConnell and led the Victoria Jazz Orchestra for several years and performed in the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra.

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
