Yu Yu, a devoted cello instructor at Beethoven at Home, holds both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Cello Performance from The Juilliard School, plus a Master's in Orchestral Performance from Manhattan School of Music. Fluent in English, Mandarin, and Taiwanese, she embraces a teaching philosophy focused on positivity, high expectations, and an open mind. Yu Yu teaches students from the age of 5, offering lessons online and at her studio in Langley. Her comprehensive background, including a second Master's and experience with students of other distinguished teachers, shapes her approach to teaching, aiming to inspire and elevate her students' musical journeys.
My teaching philosophy is to bring an open mind, a positive attitude, and high expectations to every lesson. Teaching music is a partnership, therefore I owe it to my students to bring consistency, diligence, and joy to my teaching in the hope that I can ultimately inspire and encourage such traits in the students as well.
I have both bachelors and masters degree from The Juilliard School in Cello Performance. I also acquired my second masters degree from Manhattan School of Music in Orchestral Performance. I have been playing the cello since I was seven, and the piano at age of five. My primary cello teachers were Fred Sherry, Astrid Schween, and Tu Qiang.
I currently have a private studio at the Shuang Music School, which is a Chinese-based music school in Vancouver, B.C. The school offers extensive resources for both the students and the teachers, such as term-recitals and RCM-based classes. I started my teaching career closely with Yari Bond, who is one of the cello faculty at The Special Music School and Lucy Moses School at Kaufman Music Center. She has given me many wonderful opportunities to teach her students and observe her lessons. I also occasionally give extra remote lessons to students of Astrid Schween and Yari Bond as they prepare for auditions and juries. As a graduate from both The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music, I have had the privilege of having a fulfilling journey in teaching cello, coaching chamber music, and educational outreach.

Home visit fee: $15 minimum fee. Teachers may negotiate a higher travel fee if the travel distance is longer than they are comfortable with. Most arrangements use the minimum fee.
One-Time Family Registration: $25. This covers your entire family for life - once you're in, everyone can take lessons!
Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.
Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.
When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.
Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:
Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice
Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
