Teaching Philosophy

From the first moment we bang our fists on the table or mumble our first sounds, we are all musicians! Teaching is a way to free the music that's already inside. Like learning to read and write, playing music is another form of communication, another way to tell our friends and family how we feel or what we need. Singing is a particularly delicate instrument. From a young age, society tells us that having a 'good voice' is a gift. I believe that learning to sing is like learning to do anything else, with the correct technique and lots of practice, the voice inside you will ring for everyone to hear. Teaching is sacred and is a huge responsibility. I remember how nervous I was taking lessons for the first time. The teachers that helped me grow were the ones that allowed me to fly and fail and learn from my mistakes. Instilling confidence in my students is my top priority. If we enjoy what we're doing and have confidence in our abilities, it is incredible what we can achieve. I tailor my classes to each individual. Everybody learns at different speeds and in different ways. Some students will learn to sight-read very quickly while others will develop a strong ability to play and sing by ear. All of these skills are part of a rounded musical education that will help you or your child to play and have fun with the wonderful world of sound.

Musical Education

I have an honours BA in Theatre/Music from Trinity College, Dublin, which included performance classes in voice (musical theatre) and choral singing. I studied both Piano and Singing at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and received my diploma for both from the same institution. My piano teacher was the conductor of the RTE concert band (the national television broadcast). He taught me music theory and music appreciation as well. My singing teacher was classically trained but also taught me jazz, musical theatre and popular singing.

Special Skills and Trainings

My experience has led me to teach music and drama to students of all ages in big groups and private lessons. When I'm not teaching, I am often playing music with a band or performing in musicals. I really love to give back to my community and teaching allows me to do that.

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
