Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy centers on nurturing a genuine love and enjoyment of music in my students. I aim to inspire musicality and passion, ensuring lessons are engaging and tailored to individual styles and preferences. I offer piano and voice lessons to students aged 5 and up, from beginners to advanced levels, emphasizing a fun and fulfilling learning experience. Lessons can include RCM classical curriculum, as well as Jazz, Latin, and Pop music, providing a well-rounded musical education. My background in Jazz Piano from Humber College enhances my approach, and I stress the importance of effective breathing techniques for voice students and solid technique for piano students, including Hanon Exercises. My goal is to make the musical journey rewarding and enjoyable, with a commitment to excellence.

Musical Education

I am an RCM certified piano teacher with over 25 years of experience. My journey in music began at age 8 with private piano lessons, progressing to Grade 8 piano and Grade 2 Theory. I furthered my studies at Humber College, Etobicoke, Ontario, where I earned a 4-year Honours Music Diploma, equivalent to a music degree. Humber College was renowned for its jazz program, and my time there included studying with esteemed teachers and playing in various jazz ensembles. Additionally, I have RCM Level 10 in Piano, Keyboard Harmony, History, and Level 6 in Voice, with ongoing studies in both piano and voice. My passion for teaching extends to students of all ages. I've taught piano and voice, completed the Elementary Piano Pedagogy Course with a high score, and have been part of the Northumberland Orchestra and Choir as a soloist. My voice training includes lessons with Martin Spencer of the Canadian Opera Company and Marie Alexander, a renowned singer who taught me vital breathing techniques. My approach to teaching is infused with the wealth of knowledge and techniques I've acquired over the years, tailored to inspire and advance the skills of my students.

One year, all of my students placed, bringing home quite a few first and second awards. Another year, a very talented voice student, with an outstanding voice, made it to the Provincial's ! I also play clarinet, and have won a few awards in the past from festivals. In addition to piano and voice, I also teach clarinet to beginner and intermediate students.

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
