Teaching Philosophy

We often hear about the joy of music, but miss other key emotions that music calls up: contentment, excitement, frustration, satisfaction, and grief. Learning an instrument also involves the full range of our emotions! I encourage students to embrace our full humanity in the beautiful process of learning the piano. Embracing a growth mindset approach to teaching and learning, I encourage mistakes as part of our creative process. Sometimes the “wrong” note can be as beautiful as the “right” one! I bring a holistic perspective to music lessons and believe that fully engaging our senses at the keyboard helps us to fully live in the present moment. Whether preparing for Royal of Conservatory of Music examinations or casually playing from lead sheets, I bring mindfulness and fun into the process of learning the piano. I offer lessons for adults and children aged 5 and up, suited to each learner's goals and needs.

Musical Education

I studied classical music from the age of 7 until adulthood. During my training, I studied with Regina Franke and earned my ARCT Diploma with the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto. My early teachers were detail oriented and helped me lay the groundwork for a rigorous approach to music. As an adult, I have studied the Simply Music approach to playing with a more spontaneous, improvisational approach. Together, these methods have helped me achieve a balanced, joyful, and holistic approach to developing musicianship.

Special Skills and Trainings

In addition to my music background, I am a professional writer. I have written children’s musicals for the Toronto Fringe Festival and I have over 15 years of experience in educating youth and adults. I hold a PhD in English and Cultural Studies (McMaster University) and my love of stories and storytelling has enriched me as a teacher. I love sharing my enthusiasm for creativity with children and adults!

Lessons on an online platform

Katrine can provide online instruction. While other platforms are possible BAH strongly recommends the use of the Zoom video conferencing platform as it is optimized for music lessons and audio quality.

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
