Teaching Philosophy

Music goes beyond the enjoyment of pure listening. Not only can it reflect our moods and emotions, but it can be a lifeline for pulling us out of the pits of anxiety and stress that we often find ourselves in. It can give us a reason to find joy behind the simplistic things life offers us. Music is also a great escape for many of us. The feeling of taking a piece of music, and transforming it into anything we want it to be is a feeling like no other, and the sensation we get when we allow ourselves to truly feel a piece of music and be absorbed by it completely is one that is indescribable. It is more than playing notes on a piece of paper, or listening to a melody that catches our attention. It is wanting to create something of our own, something that others cannot replicate. It is having the fundamental skills to understand why we play music, and why it brings us the joy that it does. It is a form of therapy that no matter what age, can light a fire inside of us if we allow it to.

Musical Education

I am in the progress of obtaining a BA in music from MacEwan University, specializing in music education. My specialties including theory and ear training, beginner compositions, and accompaniment playing. I have been playing the piano for 12 years. I started off taking lessons leisurely, playing mostly popular music, and as my love for my craft developed I pursued higher levels of education. My private piano teacher was trained in classical music and piano pedagogy. She is where I began to learn more about piano techniques and how to practice longevity as a pianist. It was not until I got to university where I started, and continue to, develop my skills in what it means to be a trained musician and understand the theory behind what we are playing, while also learning to perform in various different styles, including jazz, folk music, R&B and other types of popular music.
