The two things that matter most in music education are our relationship with music, and our relationship with the people we're learning with. My priority is fostering a strong relationship with my students. Developing trust and having fun together makes lessons something that we can look forward to, and opens up the space to truly learn. Beyond that, my goal is for students to fall in love with music, or to renew and deepen that love if they already have. That means seeing the path each student is on and helping them take their next step. It might mean spending a month on fundamentals, finding the right piece of repertoire to learn, or working through a creative project. I adapt our lessons based on what is most engaging and useful for each individual. There are a million ways to make music that matters to you. My work as a teacher is always about finding the right way for each student, right now. When we succeed, we nurture a relationship with music that can sustain a lifetime of creative joy. What more could we ask for?
I started on piano at age four and grew up improvising accompaniments to little scenes I imagined. I learned pieces by Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin, and the music from my favorite video games and movies. When I was twelve, I picked up the saxophone and developed an obsession with jazz that took me to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where I spent three years studying improvisation and broadening my musical horizons. By the time I graduated, I'd become focused on writing and producing songs. Since then, I've released around 40 minutes of music as Fort Hill, plus three experimental EPs and a number of collaborations with my students.
After finishing at Berklee, I studied voice with Cristi Catt, who uses a unique technique that I've adopted to help my voice students find ease and power in singing. I also studied theory and composition with W.A. Mathieu, composer and author of "Bridge of Waves," who gave me a great deal of insight into how to cut through all the fog that's common in music theory. I have kept active as a songwriter, composer and producer since leaving school, and have released about 40 minutes of music under my artist project, as well as collaborations with Orpheus Rising and my students. Collaborating with students to write and record songs has taught me a great deal about how to adapt to the individual needs and abilities of each student and find a way of making music that feels right, right now. The joy they get from hearing themselves do something they had no idea they could do is incredibly satisfying.

Home visit fee: $15 minimum fee. Teachers may negotiate a higher travel fee if the travel distance is longer than they are comfortable with. Most arrangements use the minimum fee.

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.
Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.
When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.
Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:
Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice
Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
