Ethan is a dedicated and patient music teacher offering online lessons in cello, composition, electric bass, electric guitar, guitar, and singer-songwriter. With a Bachelor's and Master's degree in cello performance, Ethan also has a passion for non-classical music, exploring composition and jazz. He emphasizes the importance of listening and encourages students to find their own musical voice, ensuring a welcoming and engaging learning environment.
My teaching revolves around the act of listening, whether that's listening to music, or words, or our bodies. I teach listening as a tool for self-discovery and self-improvement in music and in life. In my lessons I try to create a warm and welcoming environment and I encourage students to think (and listen!) critically, and to find their own voice in their playing. We spend a lot of time talking about how we feel in our own bodies, and learning how to connect more deeply to what our bodies are telling us in any given moment. Music is a joyful thing, and a great way to get in touch with our bodies and with ourselves, and this is exactly what I strive to help students discover.
I have a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Ottawa, and a Master's Degree from the University of Calgary, both specializing in cello performance. While I was studying cello I found I was also passionate about composing and creating my own music, and as such I studied composition and jazz on the side. I've always been in love with all kinds of non-classical music as well, and while I was pursuing my undergraduate degree, I was playing in various bands and jazz ensembles to supplement my rigorous classical training.
Music never came easily to me. I got a late start and I was never particularly talented, but I always loved playing. When I started music school, I didn't have the natural ability which seemed to come so easily to some of my colleagues, but I did have enthusiasm and ambition. To pursue music seriously was a difficult task, but as I trained and grew as a musician and person I learned a lot about what it means to be dedicated to a craft. I learned how to do the work I needed to do, and I built myself from the ground up (with the help of a few wonderful teachers!). This experience has given me two invaluable gifts as a teacher: patience, and perspective. I learned patience because my teachers were patient with me, and because I know all too well what it feels like to be stuck every once in a while. And I learned perspective because I remember what helped me start from the bottom, and I know how to build concepts from their most basic form, block by block; I learned how to make things make sense. This is part of what has made me the musician and person that I am today, and I wouldn't give up these experiences for anything.

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.
Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.
When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.
Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:
Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice
Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
