Teaching Philosophy

The most important part of making music is to have fun! Learning music can be understandably challenging and tough sometimes, which makes the factor of fun so much more crucial. I firmly believe that education in a captivating form can lead to a much more efficient, and healthy learning environment. My aim as a teacher is to provide lessons that are tailored to your interests, while implementing exercises and techniques that will aid your progress and keep you intrigued and content.

Musical Education

I am a graduate of Capilano University's Bachelors of Jazz Education program, which prepares me not only for music pedagogy but performance as well. Currently, I am enrolled in the University of British Columbia's Secondary Teacher Education program, which further develops my passion for teaching. I have played trumpet for about seven years in total, starting from my grade seven band class. Ever since I have always sought out the opportunity to further my abilities via private lessons, which has given me much motivation to keep striving further! Even though teaching Jazz trumpet is my specialty, I am also trained in Classical trumpet techniques, ear training, music theory, and most importantly improvisation. As well as having experience in traditional forms of music pedagogy, I also have training in Orff-Schulwerk and Kodaly methods of learning.

Awards and Distinctions

Special Skills and Trainings

I come from a musical family and have been learning music since my early childhood. My relatives and I all took classical piano lessons as children, and one of my cousins is now a music teacher. From their experiences and mine, I knew from adolescence what works for a student and what really doesn't. As you dive into the more technical parts of making music, it can feel like you are learning a new language without any basis, and I fully understand how much effort and willpower it requires to understand those things. This has led me to focus my teaching methods to provide instruction that is easy to understand and interesting to learn. Aside from teaching and being a Jazz school student, I have been performing as a professional musician for a number of years, from Jazz groups as a sideman and my personal band to opening for an event at the Commodore Ballroom. These experiences have taught me not only the knowledge of being prepared, but understanding the importance of performing music itself.

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
