Teaching Philosophy

I firmly believe that music is a captivating language accessible to all individuals, provided they invest their effort and dedication. As an educator, I value the importance of fostering a sense of joy, curiosity, and motivation in my students as they explore the material presented in each lesson. I firmly believe that a fun and engaging learning environment is essential for cultivating a student's growth as a musician. By ensuring that my students derive enjoyment from their musical endeavors, I strive to provide the necessary support and encouragement they need to thrive on this transformative journey.

Musical Education

I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Composition from Simon Fraser University and am currently immersed in the captivating world of Jazz Studies at Capilano University, where I am honing my skills as a drummer. My musical journey began at the age of six when I embarked on the path of piano mastery. Guided by a private instructor, I diligently progressed until achieving the remarkable milestone of completing my Level 10 RCM examination at the age of fifteen. While studying at SFU, I expanded my repertoire beyond classical piano, venturing into the realms of Videogame Music and Jazz, which ignited my artistic curiosity and broadened my musical horizons. As I pursued my Jazz Studies degree at Capilano, I sought guidance from esteemed professionals in the industry. Additionally, the invaluable ear training provided by Mary Jo Bischoff and Steve Kaldestad has enhanced my musical perception and elevated my overall proficiency. My educational journey, characterized by diverse musical disciplines and expert mentorship, has equipped me with a multifaceted skill set and an unyielding commitment to my craft.

Special Skills and Trainings

- Studied Jazz composition at Capilano with Jill Townsend (privately) and James Danderfer (classroom setting) - Experience with teaching kids and adults (in a different field) - Have experience composing for videogame soundtracks

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
