In my teaching philosophy, I emphasize several core principles: 1. Chenyi (also known as Cheyne) is a concert pianist and teacher based in Toronto by way of Taipei, Boston, and New York. Born of Taiwanese and Japanese parentage, she has given numerous performances in North America, Japan, and Taiwan, including a critically acclaimed performance of the Goldberg Variations of JS Bach in Seully Hall at The Boston Conservatory. She has given a recital debut in Steinway Hall, New York City. She participated in a seminar given by Andras Schiff on the topic of the Goldberg Variations at Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall in 2001. Chenyi has performed in faculty concerts held by the Department of Music of Shih-Chien University at the National Concert Hall in Taipei, and has collaborated with pianist Yi-Hsuan Lu, and veteran violinist Gee Lee in the Concert Hall of Tatung University in Taipei. Chenyi served as Adjunct Assistant Professor in Taipei, at Tatung University, and also at the National Taipei University of Technology, teaching piano performance, history of western music, and music appreciation. In 2013, she became a resident of Toronto and continues to devote herself to teaching and performing. As a classical piano teacher, Chenyi focuses on cognitive development for children and youth; creativity; the correlation between music and related arts; and piano pedagogy and musicianship. Piano recitals held in Toronto inclucinding Gallery 345 in Sep. 2015, featuring Beethoven, Paradisi, JS Bach, Ravel, and the Philadelphia-based contemporary composer, Arshak Andriasov; Heliconian Hall in Sep. 2017. In April 2018, Chenyi had a recital in Osaka along with Soprano Kuniko Omoto. The projects in 2019 will be a solo recital as well as chamber music concert in Taiwan and Japan. A graduate of the doctoral program at Columbia University’s Teachers College in New York City, Chenyi’s dissertation was “The Effect of Touch on Tone Production on a Grand Piano” which relates to performance practice and historical studies on piano playing. The New York based master teacher and performer, Seymour Bernstein, was one of the interviewees whom personally given insightful help for Chenyi to complete her academic work. She is also a recipient of Alfred. E. Lee Piano Scholarship, obtained her Master and Bachelor of Music at The Boston Conservatory. Chenyi has performed in master classes for world acclaimed concert pianists and professors including Monique Duphil, Michael Lewin, Dr. Jonathan Bass, Janice Weber, and Vladimir Feltsman. She has studied with Irwin Gelber and Ada Kopetz-Korf who are both pupils of legendary Scottish-American master pianist and a respectable teacher at the Juilliard School, James Friskin. Chenyi is a member of MTNA (Music Teachers National Association, USA), NAFME (National Association for Music Education, USA), Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association (ORMTA). Chenyi uses a Steinway Model B grand piano in her studio.
Rates and Studio Policies
Registration Fee: $25.00 (One-time lifetime registration fee may be used by all family members)
Rates for instruction:
30 minute private lesson: $39.00
45 minute private lesson: $49.00
60 minute private lesson: $59.00
Travel charge: additional $15.00 per visit (for lessons in a client's home as opposed to my studio)
1. Cancellation Policy
Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.
2. Cessation (quitting) Policy
A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.
3. Illness Policy
Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.
BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.
No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.
4. Rescheduling Policy
Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.
Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy
Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.
It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.
5. Evaluation Period
There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
Chenyi can provide online instruction. While other platforms are possible BAH strongly recommends the use of the Zoom video conferencing platform as it is optimized for music lessons and audio quality.
