Teaching Philosophy

I strive to guide students in becoming well-rounded musicians that develop a love for music that lasts a lifetime. I believe that anyone can learn to play an instrument, no matter their age or intent. I strive to bring out each student’s musical imagination and encourage creativity and self-expression through music. I believe that music should always be fun and I seek to show my students how fun music can be. My students are provided with a strong musical foundation that will prepare them for their musical path, whether it be a career or lifetime hobby. Music is more than simply playing notes on a page, as it encompasses various art forms such as dancing, singing and storytelling so these elements are incorporated into my lessons. Regardless if music is a hobby or a career, all areas of music are covered in each lesson to show all that music has to offer; theory, history, sight reading, ear training, and learning repertoire. I have learned through experience that many students are not even aware of their interests until they are introduced to it. I seek to find the area of music that will spark your child’s love for music. I look forward to taking your child on a joyful journey to experience the wonderful world of music!

Musical Education

I have been playing piano since the age of 9. I took private lessons until age 16 and again while completing my undergraduate degree. At the age of 13, I began studying the violin and trumpet. I continued my music education at Laurentian University in Sudbury studying classical trumpet performance and music history with a minor in Canadian history. Although my main instrument is trumpet, I also play piano at level 9 RCM. After graduating Laurentian, I started a Sea Cadet Band on Manitoulin Island; in which I taught brass instruments such as the mellophone, euphonium, baritone and cornet. While at Laurentian, I was first trumpet in the Laurentian Concert Band and also played in the Northern Brass Choir and the Sudbury Symphony. I then furthered my education at the University of Ottawa and gained a Teaching Assistant position in theory and history courses for the duration of my program. In April 2019, I graduated with an MA in Music (Musicology & Theory). While living in Ottawa, I taught piano, trumpet and violin at two music schools. I recently relocated to the Sudbury area and have been teaching lessons privately online and travelling to clients' homes. This past summer I hosted music programs at four of the Greater Sudbury Libraries locations. I am an active member of the Northern Brass Choir, Nickel City Wind Ensemble and the third trumpeter for the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra. I have also recently become the second trumpet player for the Whispering River Orchestra in Parry Sound! I am very passionate about self development so I continue to take courses to strengthen my skills as a teacher and musician. Most recently, I completed the Teaching Intermediate Piano Course online with the Royal Conservatory of Music in August 2024.

Special Skills and Trainings

RCM Level 9 Piano RCM ARCT Trumpet I completed the RCM Teaching Elementary Piano Course in August 2021 and the Teaching Intermediate RCM Piano Course in 2024. After graduating my undergraduate degree, I had the opportunity to start and teach a cadet brass band on Manitoulin island for ages 12 to 18, in which I taught mellophone, euphonium, baritone, trumpet and cornet.
