Teaching Philosophy

Music exists in all contexts of life and society, especially throughout history. From times of celebration to times of sorrow, music accompanies us along the way and ties us together. Musicians are the ones that make it happen. The musician must first and foremost must enjoy music, but more importantly enjoy making music. The musician is a translator of sorts, taking the words of the composer that have been transcribed as notes and translating them into audible music. Like a translator, the end result must still be recognizable as the original, but with the personal flair of the performer. The enjoyment comes from interpreting the "words" and sharing the work with an audience, whether it be among friends, family, or a large audience. I guide students through the process of translation and allow them to be able to share music with others.

Musical Education

I am currently in my fourth year of university studying Music and History, among which are performance courses. I have also completed the RCM Elementary Piano Teacher Course. I have studied piano since the age of 7, and am still studying and performing. On top of that, I was involved in several musical clubs throughout high school, including the choir and repertoire bands. For two years, I was in one of my university's choirs and developed aural skills applicable to piano. I have taught students for two years ranging in ages 6-13 and ranging in RCM levels Preparatory A to Level 4.

Special Skills and Trainings

I have participated in several performances and understand the nervousness that comes from performance. Among those performances was at a music festival in which I received feedback immediately after I played. I found that to be most helpful as this was from a different perspective and I strive to provide students with immediate feedback throughout the lesson. On top of that, I spent a year studying different musical subjects in England. From that, I gained a basic understanding of music in the European context as well as music in the context of film.

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
