Overview and History of the Tuba
The tuba is the lowest pitched and largest member of the brass family. Tubas come in various shapes and sizes but the most common instrument used in band programs is the bass tuba in double b flat. The instrument has a warm cheerful sound and can be played with remarkable dexterity. An orchestra usually has a single tuba, though occasionally a second tuba is required. It is the principal bass instrument in symphonic and military bands, and those ensembles generally have more. It serves as the bass of the brass section and of brass quintets and choirs, as well as reinforcement for the bass voices of the strings and woodwinds, and as a solo instrument. In addition to the length of the instrument, which dictates the fundamental pitch, tubas also vary in overall width of the tubing sections. Tuba sizes are usually denoted by a quarter system, with 4/4 designating a normal, full-size tuba. Larger rotary instruments are known as kaisertubas and are often denoted 5/4. Larger piston tubas, particularly those with front action, are sometimes known as grand orchestral tubas (examples: The Conn 36J Orchestra Grand Bass from the 1930's, and the current model Hirsbrunner HB-50 "Grand Orchestral", which is a replica of the large York tuba owned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra). Grand orchestral tubas are generally described as 6/4 tubas. Smaller instruments may be described as 3/4 instruments. Tubas are also important in dixieland jazz where the instrument can function as a the walking bass line. Click Here to Learn Even More About The Tuba

When to Begin Tuba Lessons
Tuba lessons can begin as soon as a child is able to support the instrument and has enough breath to blow it. Typically this begins at 11-12 years of age or later. Students wishing to learn the tuba but lacking the physical size may begin on the euphonium or baritone horn and then transfrer to the tuba when their growth allows. Procuring an Instrument for Your Tuba Lessons
Tubas are typically rented at the outset of studies. Typically a student instrument is rented and then in time an intermediate or professional quality tuba is acquired. Your local consultant will be able to help you acquire a rental instrument or a tuba to purchase.
