Teaching Philosophy

I believe in creating a supportive, flexible, and engaging space where students can learn at their own pace and explore what truly excites them. My teaching is grounded in patience, curiosity, and a close attention to detail. I would like students to experience music as something personal and meaningful, not just a skill to master, but something to enjoy deeply. Whether a student is drawn to classical repertoire, pop songs, music theory, or history, I aim to meet them where they are and help them grow from there. I structure lessons with care, but always leave room for exploration and creativity. Progress is important, but so is the joy of discovery. I focus on helping students understand music, not just play the notes. Technique, theory, and expression are all connected, and I try to make those connections exciting. I also believe that mistakes are an important part of learning. My goal is to build a low-pressure, encouraging environment where students feel safe to ask questions, take risks, and grow as musicians and people.

Musical Education

I began studying classical piano privately at the age of six and have worked with teachers in China, Australia, Canada, and the UK. This wide range of training has exposed me to diverse teaching styles and musical approaches, which has made me highly adaptable — something I bring into my own teaching as well. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Toronto (2020-2024), where I specialised in Music History, Culture, and Theory, and also completed a major in Archaeology. My undergraduate studies included private lessons, studio classes, and masterclasses in classical piano, as well as advanced coursework in Baroque, Renaissance, Medieval, and 20th-Century music history, ethnomusicology, counterpoint, and composition. Following my undergraduate degree, I have performed widely as both a solo and collaborative pianist, participating in concerts, recitals, and outreach events. I recently graduated with Distinction from the University of Oxford with a Master of Studies in Music (Musicology), where my primary research interest was ethnomusicology. During my time at Oxford, I also engaged with a broad range of topics including Music and Aesthetics, Historical Musicology, Musical Culture and Society, Instruments and Museums, Music and Global Development, and Musical Peripheries.

Awards and Distinctions

Tecumseh Sherman Rogers Award (The most prestigious honour in the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto, recognising a graduating student with the greatest potential for significant contributions to the field of music.) Moulsdale Essay Prize for the best essay in an upper-level History and Culture course. Rhodes Scholarship (shortlisted), nominated by the University of Toronto Faculty of Music. Sylvia Crossley Prize in Music History & Literature for achievement at the highest standard. Morris Hanisch Scholarship for outstanding progress as a piano student.

Special Skills and Trainings

My academic background is in music research, where I focus on how people experience and understand music in different cultural contexts. A big part of my research involves talking with people about their musical lives, which has really shaped the way I communicate as a teacher. I’ve learned how to listen carefully, adapt to different perspectives, and make space for diverse ways of learning and making music. I also have experience in music editing and production, which has taught me to hear music with precision and intention. These skills help me support students who are interested in composing, arranging, or exploring music beyond the page. I'm always excited by the diversity of musical paths students can take, and I try to create a learning environment that encourages that openness.

Getting Started Together

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.
