Teaching Philosophy

Elliot mentioned in Music Matters, “Music making is a unique and major way of gaining self-growth, self-knowledge, and optimal experience, both now and in the future.” In My teaching, technique, knowledge, and musicality are undoubtedly emphasized, particularly in their mutual importance and influence on each other. More importantly, by living and learning in a land of diverse cultures, I quickly realized the significance of culture and its inseparable connection with music, setting inclusion, empathy, and vicariousness as the virtues in daily encounters. I often encourage his students to integrate multiple disciplines in life and use music as a vehicle to deliver and express—forming the quintessential musicianship as the core of this art form. From musicianship to strengthening self-identities, I believe that there is no other vehicle other than music that provides such a holistic experience to students of all ages. Regardless of age, mistakes will be made from time to time. As Ron Carter mentioned, “The more mistakes I make, the more I get to fix them.” With such inspiration, I aim to provide a nurturing learning environment that permits students to embrace the mistakes they made and overcome the challenge, resulting in the experience of flow.

Musical Education

Born and raised in Hong Kong, I moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue my musical studies in electric bass at Los Angeles College of Music (LACM). I was honored to receive the LACM scholarship to attend my studies. During this time, I studied under Jerry Watts (John Diversa), Tim Landers (Billy Cobham, Mitch Foreman, Diana Krall), Mike Gurrola (Eric Reed, Jeff Hamilton, Benny Green), and many others in training to be a professional bassist. In 2020, I received my degree as a Valedictorian. As my passion for music philosophy and education deepens, I have decided to pursue a Master of Music in Music Education at San Jose State University under the supervision of Dr. Diana Hollinger. My research focuses on the psychological well-being of music students at the collegiate level. At the same time, I have maintained a consistent schedule of participating in musical performances, jazz ensembles, and various recording sessions.
