Teaching Philosophy

Music to me is an intuitive art. I believe that some of the rigidness of formal music education kills the creative spirit that is present in all of us. To me, music is both conversational and playful; there are no objective metrics we can use to define what is good and what is bad. That said, I believe a teacher's role is to guide the student and to direct their intuitive musical personality somewhere where they can thrive. As a result, I tend to begin my lessons by assessing what a students' musical goals are. If a student is given a certain amount of autonomy in music lessons, I find that they are much more engaged and invested and that they tend to progress faster than they would otherwise. My hope is to infuse certain ideas and philosophies into the musical skills learned and to strengthen each student's sense of musical identity.

Musical Education

I studied piano starting at the age of 10 following the Royal Conservatory's curriculum, eventually taking my Grade 10 Piano exam. I also began playing the alto saxophone in high school and took my Grade 8 exam for Saxophone. Along with these exams, I also took all of the supporting exams for Grade 10 piano, which included Harmony & Counterpoint, as well as Music History II. This background in the Royal Conservatory gave me a strong foundation for my musical formation in my undergraduate studies. I chose to study music at Carleton University, eventually graduating with a Bachelor of Music Honours degree. During my time there, I primarily studied jazz piano rather than classical music since I wanted to broaden my musical background. I began accompanying many of my peers in graded performances during this time and became adept at improvisation and playing by ear. Many of the classes in this music program were interdisciplinary; I found that I received a well-rounded education, with classes ranging from culture studies, to music psychology, as well as music history.

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
