Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy centers on nurturing each student's unique voice and potential in a supportive and inspiring environment. With over 20 years of experience, I tailor my instruction to individual strengths and goals, combining technical training with emotional expression to build both skills and confidence. I provide personalized instruction that addresses the cognitive and emotional aspects of learning, helping students overcome challenges and achieve their full potential. I believe in the importance of musical diversity. Exposure to various genres enriches students' understanding and appreciation of music. My background in jazz, pop, rock, and Latin music allows me to offer a broad and inclusive curriculum, helping students discover their unique preferences and strengths. As a native Spanish speaker with deep knowledge of Latin music, I emphasize cultural awareness, encouraging students to explore and appreciate global music traditions, enhancing their versatility and authenticity as musicians. Balancing technical proficiency with creative expression, I encourage students to experiment, improvise, and develop their musical identity. Performance opportunities build confidence and stage presence, preparing students for real-world situations. I aim to instill a passion for lifelong learning and continuous growth, fostering a motivating environment where curiosity and creativity are celebrated. In summary, my teaching philosophy is about fostering individual growth, embracing musical diversity, and promoting a lifelong love of music, helping each student find their unique voice and reach their highest potential.

Additionally, my Bachelor of Psychology from the University of British Columbia has provided me with a unique perspective on the cognitive and emotional aspects of learning and performance. This knowledge has been invaluable in my teaching career, allowing me to connect with students on a deeper level and tailor my instruction to their individual needs. My principal teachers throughout my studies have included Suzie Collier, Bess Durey, Robert Zuniga, and many others. They have shaped my approach to both performance and instruction. These mentors have instilled in me the importance of technical proficiency, emotional expression, and continuous growth as a musician and educator. Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
