Teaching Philosophy

Although I have worked with Voice and Piano students of various ages and abilities, I specialize in working with young beginners. I feel it is crucial to find ways to engage young students with music, in a manner that is personally-relevant, meaningful, and above all, fun. Artistic expression is an incredibly personal experience, and I believe that lessons should be tailored to meet students' individual needs. I like to take time in the first lesson to get to know the student - their life, interests, hobbies, etc. This allows me to customize lesson plans and develop an approach that will inspire their creativity and passion for making music. If this foundation can be laid early, this can lead to a life-long love of music and creating art. I also possess an extensive background in Music History and research. Because of my skills in this area, I enjoy providing historical context, facts and information about composers, repertoire and performance practice. This additional knowledge can really help to make music come alive for a student.

Musical Education

A native of Victoria, British Columbia, I began singing with children's choirs and taking piano lessons at the age of 5. I also participated in a variety of musical theatre productions throughout my childhood and teen years. I began formal vocal training at the age of 17, and went on to complete both a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Music, with a dual major in Vocal Performance and Music History, from the University of Victoria.

Special Skills and Trainings

- Bachelor of Music with Distinction, Music History & Literature (University of Victoria, 2006). - Master of Music, Vocal Performance & Musicology (University of Victoria, 2016).

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
