Spencer, a dedicated BAH teacher, offers piano and voice lessons to students aged 6 to adults. Based in Waterloo, Spencer provides instruction in-home, in-studio, and online. With a Bachelor of Music from Laurier and near completion of a Bachelor of Music Education from Memorial University, Spencer also specializes in teaching counterpoint, dictation, ear training, harmony, music history, advanced and beginner-intermediate music theory, and RCM curriculum.
Through the pandemic I realized that we can survive without music, but not live. I believe culture is what gives life enjoyment, and music is a part of that. I therefore believe we ought to teach culture and to a further extent, music. My role as a music educator is to allow people to participate more fully in music in society. My students should learn more about their musical interests and also explore music with which they are unfamiliar. Both of these goals will create people who have a deeper appreciation and have more enjoyable experiences with music. Through music education we can create a society that enjoys music to its fullest extent, creating the most enjoyment for everyone.
I did my Bachelor of Music at Laurier with a focus in education. I am almost finished my Bachelor of Music Education at Memorial University of Newfoundland and will be a student teacher in the fall. I also tutored first year music theory at Laurier, and completed my RCM grade 8 in piano before my undergrad. Since I was 7 years old, I've been learning piano, which also was the instrument I studied during my undergrad. I have been singing in many different types of vocal ensembles and playing in many types of instrumental ensembles since I was 12 years old. Most recently, I sang with the National Youth Choir of Canada. Due to my musical experience and education, I can not only teach piano and voice at an advanced level, but I can teach many other instruments at a beginner/intermediate level. Please reach out if you have any questions! Looking forward to hearing from you!
Spencer is a Beethoven at Home Associate Teacher
Home visit fee: $15 minimum fee. Teachers may negotiate a higher travel fee if the travel distance is longer than they are comfortable with. Most arrangements use the minimum fee.
One-Time Family Registration: $25. This covers your entire family for life - once you're in, everyone can take lessons!
Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.
Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.
When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.
Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:
Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice
Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
