Teaching Philosophy

I am a passionate private violin teacher who loves working with children. I have been in the violin teaching / music industry for over 15 years. My area of expertise has always been in introducing the violin to students of all ages as well as to help them develop and explore their love in music while having fun. I love the beauty of the Violin itself and enjoys learning different maintenance & repairing techniques as well. I teach both online and in-person lessons and use different teaching methods to adjust to every students’ needs as everyone has a different learning pace and understands things differently. My goal is to become more involved with children’s musical growth through teaching them how to enjoy music and getting them to participate in more ensembles and events. I also hope to continue working with students and creating more opportunities to perform with students and musicians of all ages.

Musical Education

I am a registered RCM violin teacher, a member of the BCRMTA (BC Registered Music Teachers' Association) and I have a Bachelor of Music Degree in Violin Performance from Western Washington University. I am fluent in Mandarin, Taiwanese and English. I was born in Taiwan and started learning the violin since I was 4 years old with Mr. Duen Huah Hsiao. Later I immigrated to Vancouver with my family when I was 10 years old and continued my violin studies with Esther Boisverd, Hok Tze Wong and Wai Chen Mizutani (who is a graduate from the Julliard music school). Shortly after I settled down with my family in Richmond, I joined the Richmond Youth Orchestra (RYO), eventually became concert mistress and performed Gypsy Airs as soloist under the conductor Mr.Spencer Bach. I was in RYO for most of my elementary/ high school years until I left for college. During my college audition days I have accomplished my RCM level 10 violin practical exam, took private lessons with Professor Marc Destrube at UBC, played in the UBC Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra and the NTU (National Taiwan University Orchestra). Later on, I got into Western Washington University, received the Don.C Walter’s scholarship to study with Professor Walter Schwede. I was on the president’s list for two full years and received my Bachelor of Music Degree in Violin Performance there. I performed in the WWU Symphony Orchestra and the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra in Bellingham, Washington as well while I was studying there. After graduating from Western Washington University, I went to The Mannes School of Music in Manhattan, New York to further expand my knowledge in music and studied with Professor Sally Thomas (student of Ivan Galamian). While I was in New York I performed in the Mannes Repertory Orchestra and the Mannes Community Orchestra as concert mistress in Manhattan, New York for two years. Thereafter I’ve returned to Vancouver and started my career in Violin teaching and performing ever since.
