Richard offers piano instruction for all ages, from beginner to advanced, along with lessons in composition, counterpoint, ear training, harmony, music history, and advanced RCM theory. With over a decade of experience and an ARCT in Piano Performance with First Class Honors with Distinction, he brings expertise shaped by competitive success and orchestral experience. Lessons are available in English and Mandarin, offered online, in-studio in Toronto, or in-home across Etobicoke, North York, and Toronto.
My lessons are individualized for each piano student based on their learning style, goals, and outcomes. I create lessons based on the student's schedule and needs, such as if they would like to be classically trained or as a casual learner (eg. having fun playing their favourite song). I will then create a framework to guide them to their goals by making each step of the way fun while working through the fundamentals. Each lesson will include evaluating and analyzing each student's unique strengths while adjusting the lesson plan accordingly and giving guidance. I make sure that each and every student is competent in the foundation of music including ear training, sight reading, technique, rhythm, note-reading, and music theory and work their way up to becoming the best musical versions of themselves. I can work for a broad spectrum of piano students, from beginner to the most advanced.
I have been playing the piano for over 10+ years and been teaching for over 5+ years. I have also obtained my ARCT in Piano Performance with First Class Honors with Distinction when I was only 14. I also been a recipient of many piano competitions and scholarships, including a Triple Gold Medal for Piano Performance (VAYA Music Festival), Double Gold Medal for Piano Performance (BC Conservatory of Music), and Prize Trophy from Steinway International Music Competition. Furthermore, I have also played French Horn in various prestigious orchestras in Vancouver and in the national level. One of my experiences was being the principle French hornist in the best youth orchestra in all of BC called the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra. From there, I was mentored from various renowned musicians and professors in Canada including Roger Cole (Juilliard graduate and Principle Oboist from numerous international orchestras), Dr. Jonathan Girard (Director of Orchestras at the University of British Columbia), Dr. Ryan Trew, Dr. Wayne Jeffrey (Graduate from Manhattan School of Music), Jordan Nobles (JUNO award winning composer), and many more.
Richard is a Beethoven at Home Associate Teacher
Home visit fee: $15 minimum fee. Teachers may negotiate a higher travel fee if the travel distance is longer than they are comfortable with. Most arrangements use the minimum fee.
One-Time Family Registration: $25. This covers your entire family for life - once you're in, everyone can take lessons!
Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.
Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.
When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.
Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:
Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice
Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
