Ren is a dedicated Beethoven at Home teacher specializing in piano and voice lessons for students aged 8 to adults. With a background in Jazz Studies and currently pursuing a Bachelor's of Music Therapy at Capilano University, Ren brings a unique blend of musical expertise and therapeutic understanding. Available for online and in-home lessons, Ren also offers training in dictation, ear training, jazz improvisation, and music theory.
One's relationship with music is often lifelong, and my teaching practice and philosophy as a mentor, teacher, and future music therapist is to cultivate a loving, nourishing relationship so that students/clients may come to know how to lean on the power of music to get through life's inevitable struggles. With its substantial effect on us humans, music can also overwhelm, harm, and bring up memories and emotions that are difficult to parse. My teaching begins with creating and holding space for these emotions and learning together how music can be harnessed as a source of positive self esteem, as an avenue for creative expression, and evoke a sense of beauty and awe. Learning about music doesn't have to be about drills, perfection, or being the "best". It can be playful, silly, improvised, and serve whatever function you want it to. Whether you want to work within the Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum or embrace free jazz, I embrace all these forms and see value in the vast cultural impressions that music has laid down.
I am currently in my fourth year at Capilano University working on my Bachelor's of Music Therapy. The first two years of my degree was a voice concentration in Capilano's Jazz Studies , which extended and sharpened my previous music education: my 6 years of private piano lessons, 3 years of choir, jazz band, and vocal jazz set me up for success in the top vocal ensemble at the university and an added 2 years of vocal training, plus continuing piano on the side. I've sung at the Orpheum with Vancouver Youth Choir Voices and have done numerous jazz gigs around the city. My current studies blend my rich musical experience with a therapeutic lense.
My experience as a gigging musician can help students with learning how to set up, being a bandleader, organizing rehearsals, working with other musicians, transcribing/writing charts. In my music therapy training, I have completed a counselling course and multiple courses about mental health/disabilities/conditions that people face. This knowledge helps me to create specialized programming and considerations in my practice to best serve any student.

Home visit fee: $15 minimum fee. Teachers may negotiate a higher travel fee if the travel distance is longer than they are comfortable with. Most arrangements use the minimum fee.
One-Time Family Registration: $25. This covers your entire family for life - once you're in, everyone can take lessons!
Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.
Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.
When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.
Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:
Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice
Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
