Teaching Philosophy

Music is a fundamental part of my life, and I am a firm believer that studying music is vital in order to achieve a well-rounded education. As I have been studying music since I was very young, I can empathize with students of all ages, and ensure that my lessons always focus on being patient and kind with oneself (alongside hard work, of course!).

Musical Education

I have recently completed a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Toronto, in which I specialized in music education, classical voice studies, and jazz improvisation. I am currently in the process of completing a Master of Teaching degree. Additionally, I have obtained songwriting credentials from the Berklee College of Music, where I did a summer songwriting intensive. I have been studying voice and piano since I was five years old, and guitar and ukulele since I was fifteen. In addition to my experience studying classical music, I have been performing in musical theatre for over a decade, and also love to sing pop, rock, and jazz! Additionally, I am a proud choir nerd, and have been singing in choirs since the age of ten. I have performed professionally in musical theatre, classical singing productions, and choral settings throughout Toronto and the GTA. In addition, I have studied with singers who have performed on Broadway and in the Canadian Opera Company.

Special Skills and Trainings

In the summer of 2018, I studied musical theatre in New York City, doing singing and dancing workshops under the instruction of Broadway performers who were, at the time, in Hamilton and Hello Dolly. In the summer of 2019, I studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, doing a summer program focusing on songwriting - particularly for pop and jazz. I have received my Level 10 RCM certificate for classical voice, and also my Level 9 RCM Harmony certificate. I have taught RCM performance and theory with students as young as 6, who all passed their exams with flying colours!

Lessons on an online platform

Rachel can provide online instruction. While other platforms are possible BAH strongly recommends the use of the Zoom video conferencing platform as it is optimized for music lessons and audio quality.

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
