I believe that music is a reflection into our emotions; no matter how we experience this medium, whether it be playing, creating, or simply listening, we are in-tune with our emotions. As performers, we utilize our emotions as a catalyst to move our bodies to become extensions of the piece, essentially becoming instruments of the original composers intentions. Similarly, as a composer we must utilize these emotions in our piece as they help guide our writing. Our emotions shape the narrative of the story we want to create through our music. I want to not only teach students how to properly create and play music, but to help them understand the narrative and emotional drive of what they seek to play and create, to help them truly appreciate and admire the kind of work that goes into these mediums and to hopefully inspire others as well!
From a very young age I was classically trained in piano and have been blessed with amazing teachers who have helped guide and cultivate the pianist I am today. From age 4 to 19 I was taught privately, and throughout middle and highschool I was taught at Mount Royal Conservatory. My teacher was an esteemed graduate from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia; she shaped me into the pianist and teacher that I am today. I studied RCM all the way up to level 10 and am currently enrolled at the University of Calgary and working to finishing my Bachelor of Music degree, specializing in Composition. I have been given the opportunity to study with some of Canada's most prolific composers.
Some of my more notable awards and achievements are as follows: -Calgary Kiwanis Music Festival, Gold certificate, Piano solo - Recital, 11 years and under (2013) -Calgary Performing Arts Festival, Red certificate, Piano solo - Recital, 14 years and under (2016) -Calgary Performing Arts Festival, Gold certificate for Piano Solo - Contemporary Composers 15 years and under (2017) -Calgary Performing Arts Festival, Gold certificate for Piano Solo - Bach, Minimum Associate Standard (2017) -Completion of RCM Advanced Rudiments -Achieving RCM Grade 10 Piano with First Class Honours
Outside of my rigorous music education, I always schedule time to cultivate my own portfolio within online music communities. Due to my interest in video game music, I've always been inspired to try and replicate and create similar sounding pieces. This interest eventually lead me to meet like-minded individuals who have helped me grow as a composer. I have further honed my skills through numerous online music competitions. I developed this side of my music alongside my academic pursuits in university. Recently, I've been given the opportunity to have one of my compositions featured in the Emerging Composers concert held by the Land's End Ensemble-- a Juno nominated contemporary music ensemble based in Calgary.
