Teaching Philosophy

Music has been my lifelong companion, shaping my path and bringing profound changes into my life over the past few years. It has opened doors to incredible communities, provided meaningful job opportunities, and has been central to my journey of self-discovery. As a teacher, I believe that music is not just about learning techniques or notes; it's about exploring and connecting with the world, ourselves, and other people. I encourage my students to approach music with a spirit of curiosity and adventure. Every lesson is an opportunity to explore new sounds, stories, and emotions, and I strive to create an environment where students feel free to experiment and grow. Some of the most fulfilling musical experiences I've had are when I, or a few friends and I, simply sit down, play, explore, and let loose—embracing the joy of creating music together. These moments of spontaneous music-making remind me that music is not just a skill to be mastered but a form of play, exploration, and connection. I want my students to experience that same freedom and joy.

Musical Education

I have a minor in music (BSc.) from the University of British Columbia, where my studies were concentrated in composition and music theory. I studied piano privately from the age of five until the age of sixteen, when I completed my RCM 10. I studied composition at UBC under Drs. Jennifer Butler, Dorothy Chang, and Serra Hwang, and I have previously taken private lessons/critiques with Hope Salmonson, Jimuel Dave Dagta, and Benjamin Sigerson.

Special Skills and Trainings

I grew up immersed in music, often experimenting and finding joy in simply "messing around" at the piano and seeing what works. My approach to music has always been one of exploration and curiosity, where the process is as important as the result. This mindset has shaped me as both a musician and a teacher. With experience in classical composition, electronic music production, and working as a collaborative pianist with many diverse musicians, I bring a wide range of musical perspectives to my teaching. I encourage my students to explore different styles, embrace mistakes as part of the journey, and develop their own unique voice in a supportive and open environment.

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
