About Nicholas
Nicholas is a versatile multi-instrumentalist teaching baritone, euphonium, trombone, trumpet, tuba, ukulele, and electric bass and guitar. A graduate of Mohawk College’s Applied Music program and the University of Toronto’s Bachelor of Music program, he brings extensive pedagogical expertise to his students. He offers a personalized approach across classical and contemporary styles. Nicholas provides in-home lessons in Burlington and Oakville, as well as online sessions.

Teaching Philosophy
Music is far more than a set of notes on a page; it is a discipline that shapes how we interact with the world. My philosophy as a teacher is built on the belief that music education should be as structured as a formal composition, yet as instinctive as a heartbeat. I approach teaching much like I approach my time in the outdoors: with patience, observation, and a deep respect for the process. Just as a successful day of fishing requires an understanding of the environment and refined technique, mastering an instrument requires a foundation of physical awareness and mental focus. I aim to help students find their "flow state," where the technical challenges of the instrument—whether it's the complex phrasing of progressive rock or the precision of a classical etude—become second nature through consistent, mindful practice. I believe that every student, regardless of age or starting point, deserves a mentor who validates their unique musical voice. In my studio, we prioritize: The "Whole-Student" Approach: Integrating technical proficiency with the joy of creative expression. Resilience through Practice: Learning that mistakes are not failures, but necessary data points on the path to mastery. Inclusive Engagement: Whether a student is inspired by the melodic hooks of Alter Bridge or the rigors of the RCM curriculum, I meet them where their passion lies. Ultimately, my goal is to foster a lifelong relationship with music. I want my students to leave their lessons not just as better musicians, but as more disciplined, confident, and curious individuals.
Musical Education
I hold an honours degree in Music Education from Wilfrid Laurier University and am currently completing my Bachelor of Education at Nipissing University, specializing in music for grades 6-12. My training has been diverse, spanning rigorous classical theory and performance as well as contemporary styles. Beyond the classroom, my musical education has been shaped by a deep interest in progressive rock and modern composition, particularly the melodic and technical structures of bands like Alter Bridge. This blend of formal academic training and contemporary influence allows me to approach music education with a versatile perspective. Outside of my primary studies, I am also an avid outdoorsman, often finding that the discipline required for music mirrors the patience and focus I've developed through years of fishing and training my two dogs, Rex and Nova.
Special Skills and Trainings
"My musical foundation is built on the power and precision of the brass family, with a primary specialization in the Trombone. There is a unique physical resonance and 'lung-power' required for brass that I’ve carried into my teaching—starting every session with the same breath-work and posture focus I use in my own practice. My 'boots-on-the-ground' experience comes from my recent practicum placements in North Bay, where I’ve had the privilege of leading Grade 7 and 8 concert bands. Navigating the energy of a middle-school brass section has taught me more about classroom management and adaptive instruction than any textbook ever could. Whether I’m helping a student hit their first clear partial or breaking down a complex riff from a rock band, I draw on that real-world classroom experience to keep the learning practical, engaging, and grounded."

Associate Teacher Lesson Rates:

- 30 minutes: $39
- 45 minutes: $49
- 60 minutes: $59
Home visit fee: $15 minimum fee. Teachers may negotiate a higher travel fee if the travel distance is longer than they are comfortable with. Most arrangements use the minimum fee.
One-Time Family Registration: $25. This covers your entire family for life - once you're in, everyone can take lessons!

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.
Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.
When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.
Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:
Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice
Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
