About Katrina
Katrina is a passionate educator teaching piano, viola, and violin in English and French. She holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees from McGill University and the Eastman School of Music, as well as an RCM ARCT (Violin). She focuses on strong foundations and creativity, aiming to create a lasting love for music in her students. Katrina offers online lessons, in-studio lessons in Thunder Bay, and in-home lessons in Thunder Bay and Calgary.

Teaching Philosophy
I’m a passionate performer and educator, and what I love most about teaching is sharing my joy of music with others. Music has the power to inspire, comfort, and transform, and my goal in every lesson is to help students discover their own connection to it and grow in confidence. I focus on building strong foundations in sound, posture, and technique, but I also make space for curiosity, creativity, and exploration, because I believe learning music should be as joyful and expressive as it is disciplined. I adapt each lesson to each student’s pace, interests, and goals, approaching every moment with calm, care and patience. More than just teaching notes on a page, I hope to instill a lasting love and appreciation for music, so that every student (and parent!) leaves lessons feeling encouraged, proud of their progress, and excited to share their music with the world.

Awards and Distinctions
In recognition of my musicianship, I have received awards in the Kiwanis Music Festival, Canadian Music Competition, and Contemporary Showcase Music Festival, as well as support from Alberta Arts, the Buxton Fellowship, and the Simon Rose Memorial.
Special Skills and Trainings
I grew up surrounded by music. My first inspirations were my mother, a professional orchestral violinist for over 40 years, and my father, a professional orchestra trombonist and advocate for musicians’ rights. I began playing the violin at the age of three through the Suzuki Method with my mom and private teachers. I trained at my local Conservatory and Youth Orchestra and earned my RCM ARCT certificates in violin, history, and theory by the age of seventeen. I have participated in numerous festivals, including the National Arts Centre Orchestra Mentorship Program (Canada), Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (Germany), National Orchestral Institute & Festival (USA), American Institute of Musical Studies (Austria), National Academy Orchestra of Canada, National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and Domaine Forget. I also served as a teaching assistant at the Eastman School of Music, leading remedial music theory sessions equivalent to RCM Advanced Rudiments, and I’m currently training for my Alexander Technique certificate. When I’m at home, I enjoy performing violin duets in hospitals, care homes, and schools with my mom, sharing music directly with my communities.

Katrina can provide online instruction. While other platforms are possible BAH strongly recommends the use of the Zoom video conferencing platform as it is optimized for music lessons and audio quality.Reviews
Associate Teacher Lesson Rates:
Katrina is a Beethoven at Home Associate Teacher
- 30 minutes: $39
- 45 minutes: $49
- 60 minutes: $59
Home visit fee: $15 minimum fee. Teachers may negotiate a higher travel fee if the travel distance is longer than they are comfortable with. Most arrangements use the minimum fee.
One-Time Family Registration: $25. This covers your entire family for life - once you're in, everyone can take lessons!
Our Promise to You
Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.
Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.
When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.
Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:
Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice
Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
