Teaching Philosophy

I believe that music should be learned through a passion for playing and listening. I go about teaching in a way that allows the student to bring their own interests to the session and teach what is required to learn the music that the student is passionate about. I am very adaptive, and I also enjoy listening to very diverse genres of music which allows me to cater the lesson to the individual, and draw from the shared passion for music of both the student and I.

Musical Education

I attended MacEwan University for 3 years where I was the signer for the large Jazz ensemble. I obtained a Diploma in Jazz and contemporary music performance specializing in voice. I studied voice, piano, and guitar privately from the age of four until the age of eighteen. I was raised in a musical family where we played bluegrass together, and often switched instruments depending on the song. I learned to sing harmony and play flatpicking style guitar, clawhammer banjo, mandolin, and upright bass from my experiences with family, attending multiple music camps and jam sessions. My main area of expertise is in learning through ear training, and the Nashville numbering system. I have led my own music projects since the age of sixteen. I currently lead my project, where I write music, and perform both solo and with a band consisting of a drummer, bassist, lead guitar player, and synth player. I perform around the city and across the country with multiple projects singing backups, and playing guitar and bass. I can teach basic music theory and songwriting on all of the instruments listed.

Special Skills and Trainings

I was present for other students' critiques and evaluations in Jazz school, learning and understanding the ways that voices and instruments are interpreted by the audience. I have worked in elementary schools and centres for adults with disabilities which has allowed me to learn through experience all of the ways people learn. I value all different kinds of learning whether through basic rhythm and participation or music theory and games, to song based learning, or technique. I have played at several music festivals where artists collaborate with each other and have learned how to improvise, jam, and lead different collective music playing and listening experiences.

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
