Teaching Philosophy

Music has been a guiding force in my life, and I believe it has the power to inspire, connect, and bring out the best in each of us. As a teacher, I strive to create an environment where students feel supported, encouraged, and free to explore their musical abilities. Whether it’s a beginner discovering the joy of playing their first notes or a more advanced student working on refining their technique, my goal is to make the learning process engaging and enjoyable. I see each lesson as a collaboration, where I guide students through their unique musical journeys. I focus on building a solid foundation of technique while also nurturing their creativity and expression. For me, teaching goes beyond just mastering an instrument; it’s about helping students build confidence, discipline, and a lifelong appreciation for music. I believe that learning music should be a joyful experience, and I incorporate elements of fun and exploration into my teaching. I encourage my students to embrace mistakes as part of their growth, fostering an atmosphere where they can experiment and take risks without fear. Every student, regardless of age, deserves patience, understanding, and respect, and I tailor my approach to meet their individual needs. Music is more than a skill; it’s a language that speaks to our emotions and brings people together. As a teacher, I’m passionate about helping my students find their own voices through music, guiding them towards their personal goals while sharing in the excitement of their progress.

Special Skills and Trainings

My participation in festivals like the Toronto Summer Music Festival, Big Lake Festival, and Ottawa Chamberfest has been instrumental in broadening my musical horizons. These experiences allowed me to work alongside top-tier musicians, exposing me to new styles and approaches that I now bring into my teaching and performance. Additionally, my time in the EQ Lamp program at the Lunenburg Academy of Music, under the mentorship of Barbara Hannigan, taught me the importance of versatility and creativity in music-making. I have had the privilege of performing with esteemed ensembles such as the Canadian Opera Company, Esprit Orchestra, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, and Orchestre symphonique de Drummondville. These experiences have honed my skills in collaboration, adaptability, and precision, all of which I pass on to my students. My time with these orchestras has given me insight into the nuances of ensemble playing and the importance of listening and responding to others in real-time. Starting in September 2024, I took on the role of Principal Clarinet with the Orchestre symphonique du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. This position has been a significant milestone in my career, requiring leadership, responsibility, and a deep commitment to excellence. It has reinforced my belief in the value of clear communication and meticulous preparation, qualities that I emphasize in my teaching to help students build confidence and stage presence.

When You're Under the Weather
