Jay is a dedicated drumset teacher based in Sherwood Park, offering lessons in-studio, in-home (Edmonton area), and online. Currently pursuing a jazz performance degree at MacEwan University, Jay brings over a decade of experience and specializes in drumset, jazz improvisation, and beginner to intermediate music theory.
Since I was a child I've taken interest in music before anything else. I believe the affect the study of music has on the human mind is paramount to the development of an intelligent and understanding person. Music education through public school band programs and the like are a great start, but lack the individual critique and guidance offered by a personal teacher. Teaching has always been second nature to me, I thrive off of helping others and get truly giddy watching someone grow. I feel it is important to cater to the long-term outlook of the student, whether you want to be a rockstar or a casual musician, or something in between. I am looking to help students to be fulfilled in their musical ability, and to have a creative outlet that proves to be a wholistic and instensive work-out.
Currently a second year in jazz performance at MacEwan University, alongside eight years of private instruction. I've studied the drums for slightly over a decade, beginning at 9 years old. Now at 19 years, I am still young, but heavily experienced in performance, and the study of music. I am well versed in contemporary genres such as pop, rock, metal, hip-hop, and rap, aswell as jazz, soul, and Latin genres.
3 consecutive high brass awards on trumpet; 3 consecutive jazz musicianship awards on drums from Ardrossan JS Highschool.
I've been performing for over 7 years, and am interested in teaching performance techniques, aswell as the way to being a musician and an instrumentalist. As a drummer, I teach the significance of independence and interdependence on the kit. This alongside groove and time feel will allow you to successfully, and musically, play along to tracks and with a band. I also teach basic to intermediate theory and soloing techniques.

Home visit fee: $15 minimum fee. Teachers may negotiate a higher travel fee if the travel distance is longer than they are comfortable with. Most arrangements use the minimum fee.
One-Time Family Registration: $25. This covers your entire family for life - once you're in, everyone can take lessons!
Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.
Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.
When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.
Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:
Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice
Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
