With a background in MacEwan University's Bachelor of Music program, Jacob brings experience in various instruments, songwriting, and sound design. He also teaches subjects like ear training, jazz improvisation, and music theory.
Making music is one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had, but it comes with challenges, especially early on. Learning new things can be intimidating, and not being able to make an instrument do what you want it to do can definitely be frustrating. I think it is fundamental to teaching music to be as mindful of this fact as possible. I aim to create a space where a student feels comfortable to make mistakes, ask questions, and progress at whatever pace they feel ready to. I also think it's very important to focus as much as possible on a student's interests (such as specific genres, songs, or techniques) because the feeling of accomplishment that comes from this type of goal setting can be an excellent motivator to improve.
I am currently completing my second year in MacEwan University's Bachelor of Music program. I have studied guitar with Macewan instructors Jamie Phillip, Mo Lefeve, and Jim Head and privately through Crescendo Music Studios' Ryan Ast and Thomas Shenher.
I am currently in the process of obtaining a ProTools certification as part of MacEwan's Recording and Sound Design program. I have worked on my own projects as a singer-songwriter where I have recorded drums, bass, guitar, vocals, and midi as well as mixed and mastered them. I created scoring for various student films while attending high school at Victoria School of the Arts, where I also completed the guitar 10, 20, and 30 programs. I play drums in a local band, and I was a bassist in the MacEwan contemporary combos.

Home visit fee: $15 minimum fee. Teachers may negotiate a higher travel fee if the travel distance is longer than they are comfortable with. Most arrangements use the minimum fee.
One-Time Family Registration: $25. This covers your entire family for life - once you're in, everyone can take lessons!
Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.
Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.
When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.
Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:
Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice
Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
