Teaching Philosophy

Hello, I’m Isobel! I’ve been teaching guitar for over 12 years. I am particularly interested in how we learn music and navigate different aspects of learning, such as feeling stuck on our instruments, performance anxiety, and self-criticism, so we can truly enjoy learning and playing music and tap into the creativity that we all have in us. I have a bachelor’s degree in jazz guitar from Concordia university, and the styles I love and teach the most are folk, rock, jazz, pop and bluegrass. I also teach ear-training and theory. My goal is to help students find joy and motivation in all aspects of learning and playing music and tackle the more challenging elements without feeling rushed or stressed.

Musical Education

I have a BA in jazz studies from Concordia University. I studied classical piano and then violin from a very young age, and started taking guitar lessons when I was 13. I decided to pursue guitar more seriously when I was 18, and first enrolled at Capilano University in the jazz studies department for two years, before moving back to Montreal to finish my degree at Concordia.

Special Skills and Trainings

In 2020, I was accepted for a Jeunes Volontaires program to do a year-long research project on performance anxiety and musical learning. In 2022, I attended the Alternative Guitar Summit in New York state for the first time. In 2023, I received a scholarship to attend this guitar summit for a second time. This week-long intensive camp included lectures, performances and clinics by Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Julian Lage, Gilad Hekselman and Camila Meza. It was a truly wonderful experience and I learned so much from these incredible musicians and teachers.

Lessons on an online platform

Isobel can provide online instruction. While other platforms are possible BAH strongly recommends the use of the Zoom video conferencing platform as it is optimized for music lessons and audio quality.

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
