Teaching Philosophy

I believe that anyone can learn an instrument, regardless of their individual circumstances. It's all about meeting where the student is at, and building their skills from there; molding the lessons to provide the education the individual is looking for. The mental and physical benefits of playing an instrument are profound, and my goal is to share these benefits with my students, while also honing their skills in bettering their instrument. Another core component of my teaching is injury prevention. Playing an instrument like the tuba can cause a lot of tension in the neck and shoulders for some individuals; so prevention is key in avoiding any future injuries and discomfort. Furthermore, the teacher student relationship is sacred, so creating a welcoming space in my teaching is vital in order to provide the best education I can for each student.

Musical Education

I graduated from the University of Lethbridge in 2023 with a Bachelor of Music in tuba performance, with Great Distinction. My time at ULethbridge included many ensemble and solo performances, as well as teaching opportunities in both private and group settings. I was an early childhood music teacher for the ULethbridge Conservatory of Music, and a freelance clinician for the Conservatory and local band programs. I conducted and assisted band retreats taking place on the university campus and was also involved throughout the Faculty of Fine Arts in numerous ways; including: stage management, social media management, and TA-ing. Notably, I was the conductor for the University Wind Orchestra during the 2023 Spring Convocation ceremonies. In addition to my university experience, I was a student of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Institute, Domaine Forget de Charlevoix Academy, a mentee in the International Women's Brass Conference, and a musician for the Denis Wick Canadian Wind Orchestra. My day job is being a student recruitment officer for my alma mater, so education is very important to me. I speak with all kinds of high school students every day to help them in their journey to higher education. I believe my love of teaching music has seeped into this role.

Special Skills and Trainings

I spent my childhood making up songs, playing cheap instruments, and simply exploring what the music around me had to offer. My love of music is deeply rooted in my upbringing, which has only grown as I pursued higher education in music performance. Holding a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Lethbridge, I was provided many amazing opportunities which supplements my university classes and responsibilities. In addition to my private lessons with my studio instructor, Dr. Nick Sullivan, I participated in numerous summer programs. I was twice a student in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Institute, a student of the Domaine Forget de Charlevoix Academic in Quebec, a mentee for the International Women's Brass Conference, and the Denis Wick Canadian Wind Orchestra. Most recently, I was a musician for the Badlands Passion Play which took place most weekends in July 2024. During these off-campus opportunities, I was taught by Chris Lee (NAC Orchestra), Velvet Brown (Penn State University), Jan Duga (The United States Air Force Band), Peder MacLellan (Vancouver Symphony Orchestra), Øystein Baadsvik (world renowned soloist), Austin Howle (OSM), Pierre Beaudry (OSM), and Tom McClasin (Calgary Philharmonic). All of these instructors have such diverse experiences and knowledge, which I now carry into every lesson I teach.
