Teaching Philosophy

I offer patient, structured, and engaging piano lessons that prioritise student goals and well-being. We’ll focus on building sound, musicality, and technique along with enjoyment of the instrument. As you build your skills, we’ll also delve deeper into music history, theory, and everything else between the lines!

Musical Education

I graduated with First-Class Honours BMus from the University of Auckland, New Zealand in classical piano. A recipient of the Anne Bellam Scholarship, I also achieved my Associate Trinity College London Diploma in 2019. My university training has encompassed many diverse areas of music, including musical pedagogy. I have also had training in chamber music, accompaniment, sight-reading, orchestral piano and vocal coaching. I was fortunate to participate in masterclasses in Switzerland and Poland with renowned artists Edith Fischer and Nikolai Demidenko. Currently, I study with Dr Jarred Dunn.

Awards and Distinctions

- Anne Bellam Scholarship 2024 - Norah Howell Award, Hamilton Performing Arts Competitions - Adam Charitable Trust Scholarship, National Youth Orchestra - Bill Clayton Memorial Scholarship for the Conductor’s Prize, National Youth Orchestra - Joann Kerr Gold Award, NZCT Chamber Music Contest - National Finalist, NZCT Chamber Music Contest - Northland Regional Winner, NZCT Chamber Music Contest

Special Skills and Trainings

As a Chinese New-Zealander, I teach fluently in both English and Mandarin Chinese. I have also undertaken additional studies in a diverse range of instruments, including classical voice, violin, and percussion. I love working with singers, and have experience as a vocal coach with University of Auckland Opera Scenes, and répétiteur with New Zealand Opera. I’m also an excellent sight-reader—which I believe is a vital skill for students—and love to help my students improve in this regard. Sight-reading allows you to collaborate with your friends and play music together. Added bonus—you’ll learn faster too!

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
