Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy of teaching is that when it comes to music and learning an instrument, productive learning and fun don't have to be mutually exclusive. Math and English tests in Junior and Senior High School, and project deadlines at work are already stressful enough. Why not treat music as a therapeutic break from the stress in your life? You'll still learn plenty from me, but at a pace you can absorb with no high pressure deadlines. I use the "less is more, slow down to speed up" strategy- By teaching my students the right blend of compact, practical and hands-on method and theory right from the start, it ensures (1) that they're not unlearning the wrong techniques months or years down the road, and (2) that they have a rock-solid foundation for lifelong learning by knowing all the bedrock basics.

Musical Education

I first picked up guitar shortly before graduating High School, and then took three years of technique and theory-intensive lessons from both a highly accomplished classical (fingerstyle) teacher and a graduate of Musicians Institute (Guitar Institute Of Tech) in Los Angeles, California. In the years afterward, while starting to perform live as a professional musician, I used everything I learned from my own teachers to pick up and further apply a regimen of more advanced theory and technique. As a singer, I learned my chops out of necessity. I had started a professional band from scratch and gone through a number of singers, all of whom proved to be too flaky or unreliable... so I spent the money to take 4 months' worth of voice lessons and learned how to put them into practice. I'm proud to say that since then I've never had to replace the frontman!

Special Skills and Trainings

The greatest practical education I've acquired as a musician has been as a live performer, which is where the rubber really hits the road in my opinion. Not long after my 3 years of private lessons, I co-founded and extensively performed with an original prog rock trio that lasted for about a decade, with the common theme being that we'd keep getting our fans come up to us after a show and say "Wow! I can't believe how much you guys look and sound like Rush!" Overlapping the prog rock project I also collaborated as a studio musician on a duet project, during which time we put out a very prolific and eclectic selection of material. Since then, I've been performing as both guitar player and lead singer for a tribute to a very popular British rock band. I can't say who, but when we play their hits we really rock till we drop and pour on the sugar! We've been treated to first-class limousine trips to our shows and hotel rooms one floor up the elevator from our concert stage!

Lessons on an online platform

Brennan can provide online instruction. While other platforms are possible BAH strongly recommends the use of the Zoom video conferencing platform as it is optimized for music lessons and audio quality.

Our Promise to You

Getting Started Together
We don't offer free trials, but we do something better - a relaxed 2-lesson getting-to-know-you period. You can pause anytime with just 24 hours notice. After your third lesson, we ask for a friendly 2-lesson heads up if you need to stop.

Life Happens - We Get It
Give us 24 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule and you'll receive full credit. Planning a family vacation or summer break? Perfect - just let us know a day ahead and we'll pause your lessons.

When You're Under the Weather
If illness strikes with short notice (less than 24 hours), you'll still be charged since your teacher has reserved that time. However, most teachers are happy to offer makeup lessons when possible - they have the final say, especially if last-minute cancellations become a pattern.

Stopping Lessons
Need to take a break? We just ask for a 2-lesson notice:

Weekly lessons = 2 weeks notice
Every other week = 3 weeks notice
Twice weekly = 1 week notice

Summer breaks are different - no notice period needed when you return in the fall!
