Teaching Philosophy

Music has been a fundamental part of my being ever since I was a little kid, and that everyone has music in them as a part of their being. From the sound of their breath, to the rhythm of their heart beat, music is a part of life. Music is an integral part in education as it helps bring out the joy and creativity of every individual who plays, sings, or listens to it. As a teacher, I want to bring out that creativity and joy out of my students so that they come to love the music they are playing or listening to, and let it be a part of their life, and their overall-being. In my lessons, I want to help the student focus on how they can express their own thoughts and ideas into the pieces that they are playing, through various means of imagery and story-telling in their pieces. Through this I truly believe that kids and adults can find that joy and creativity and let it burst forth into their music playing, and enjoy it.

Musical Education

I have recently graduated from Brock University with a Bachelor of Music degree. I studied piano from the age of 4 until 16, when I switched my focus to organ, which I majored in for my Bachelor's degree. In this degree, I took courses in the following areas of, music history, music theory and harmony, composition, conducting, and instrumental techniques (improvisation, woodwinds, and percussion). I took additional courses in choral pedagogy, and music education. I also completed two organ recitals in both my third and fourth year with marks being 88-90% for them. Throughout my music education, all my teachers were very supportive and helpful of my advancing as a musician. The training I underwent was rigorous and detailed, and I am very thankful for it. In addition to piano and organ, I had music education as a choral scholar through the Avanti Chamber Singers, and am a member of Chorus Niagara, learning various choral rep and taking in various conducting and choral rehearsal techniques under Robert Cooper.

Awards and Distinctions

RCM Piano and Theory Exams in Grades 1, 6, 7, and 8 Various scholarships and awards through Brock University Department of Music such as: General Brock Entrance Award for Music, Brock Scholars Award, Doris White Memorial Bursary, Bradley Music Education Trust Award, and the Evelyn Fenwick Scholarship in Music.

Special Skills and Trainings

My music training was spent primarily in one-on-one sessions with my teachers, and as such, functions at a natural level with me, and is my preferred way of teaching, as I believe it is most valuable to have that one-on-one relationship between student and teacher. I have also worked in large group settings such as choirs in the past, especially at my church. These experiences have enriched me both as a student and teacher since these methods have allowed me to step out and showcase the joy and creativity of music that is part of everyone's inner-being.
